What is In Home Care?

In-home care are services offered in your own home or within another senior living setting to allow an older adult to maintain their independence as long as possible. These services may be homemaker-related, such as housekeeping, laundry or meal preparation. Or, in-home care can also be personalized, hands-on care, such as assistance getting dressed, taking a shower or bath, or help managing medications. The purpose of in-home care is to provide enough assistance to allow a person to remain in their current living situation. These services are flexible and fluid. Our caregivers are willing to serve both short-term or long-term needs of our clients. The caregivers are accustomed to altering hours and days of service, based upon their care recipients’ needs and preferences.

What is Live In Care?

24hr care is a cost-effective option for seniors who need an around-the-clock presence. Our caregivers monitor safety, attend to all daily needs, as well as provide companionship.

What is Respite Care?

Respite denotes a short-term commitment to arranging or accepting care. The term is also used to define occasional support services offered by a paid caregiver to supplement, or take over fully, the responsibility of another person’s care. Respite care generally may be for a fixed or specific period of time. In instances when a caregiver temporarily or intermittently replaces a permanent caregiver (family or professional), the term “respite care” is also applicable. We are happy to discuss this option further with you.

What is the difference between In Home Care and Home Health Care?

In-home care typically refers to non-medical care, such as personal care services, homemaking assistance, and companionship for older adults in order to maintain their independence in their homes as long as possible. Home health care services provide skilled nursing care and other medical care such as speech, occupational and/or physical therapy. While home health care must be deemed necessary and ordered by a physician and is covered by health insurance, in-home care services are not.

How do I know if I or a Loved One is ready for in home care?

If you are reading this page, chances are you would benefit by arranging some caregiving assistance. In-home care can be scheduled within a 24-hour period of time after contact with Assured In-Home Care. Various amounts of time can be arranged, from a short visit (4-hour minimum) to an overnight shift to get you through an unexpected yet immediate need. One benefit of starting with a short amount of continuous support at first is that it allows care recipients to become comfortable having a caregiver in their home. Fortunately, once a relationship is forged with a caregiver, older adults tend to grow accustomed to and welcome the assistance. If you find you are lacking energy to complete tasks, or if you feel unsafe doing certain things in your home, you may want to consider hiring a home care assistant. If you or your loved one are missing social interaction, a companion or caregiver will offer camaraderie and enhance your quality of life. If you are the spouse of someone needing care, chances are you are in need of support, even if it is only a couple of days per week. Being responsible for another person causes stress and can even lead to illness or premature death of the caregiver. You need some free time to take care of yourself! If you are the adult child of a parent(s) who need help, you may be experiencing some fears or resentment toward them. Family caregivers often find it difficult to maintain a healthy balance in his or her own personal life. The older adult may become accustomed to receiving help, and either become more dependent as a result or become less appreciative of the help the family provides.

How many hours a day and how frequently should I schedule assistance?

Home care assistance is flexible and Assured In-Home Care is happy to provide care whenever and wherever needed. We strongly suggest arranging a minimum of three days a week in 4 hour blocks of time to start. This achieves a baseline of service and allows enough personal interaction between the caregiver and care recipient to develop a trusting relationship. This acceptance of initial services and connection with a caregiver will prove vital if and when care needs increase. Requesting a combination of household chores, personal services and companion services offers the most financially favorable and cost effective means of assistance. As time progresses and needs increase, in-home care can provide either a live-in caregiver or three 8-hour shifts of staff to cover 24-hour care.

What should I expect of an in home caregiver?

Talking openly and honestly about your or your loved one’s preferences and expectations is important to the development of a successful and long-term relationship with an in-home caregiver. Placing tasks in writing via a personalized Care Plan is part of our services and helps insure expectations are clearly communicated and understood by all involved. After an initial transition period, it is wise to revisit the Care Plan, discussing with the caregiver and/or care manager what expectations are being met, which are being exceeded, and which areas require improvement. Assured In-Home Care caregivers often offer a blend between completing tasks or chores and allowing time for personal interaction with their care recipients.

Will I always have the same caregiver?

The majority of our clients enjoy the comfort of a familiar primary caregiver. In situations where extended care is needed, we assemble the best possible team to meet your needs. We introduce backup caregivers early on in the client’s care to insure familiarity and comfort while continuing to provide the highest level of care.

Is my caregiver insured and bonded?

Yes! All of our caregivers are employees of Assured In-Home Care; they are not independent contractors. They are insured and bonded to provide your family complete protection against liability. They are also covered by Worker’s Compensation insurance in case they are ever injured while working in your home.

What is the transition period like initially with a new caregiver in our home?

Each person experiences their own transition period related to in-home care. There is always a period of adjustment for accepting the idea that care is needed, to growing to trust a caregiver, and then letting down barriers and embracing assistance offered. Some people are readily accepting of receiving care and are immediately trusting of their caregiver. Other people need time to grow used to the idea of accepting help and/or paying for care. We find most people need 60 days before they grow accustomed to this new way of life.

What transportation options are available via a caregiver?

Going to doctors’ appointments or getting out for a change of pace and interacting with other people is a necessity for a person’s well-being. Arranging trips for pleasure, like shopping or a trip to the park, are always possible. Other trips which may add to our clients’ quality of life include visits to a community center, a senior center, or attending church services. Assured’s caregivers can provide transportation services.

Is in home care a short-term fix?

It may be, but then again, some clients have been receiving in-home care for over a decade from us. Our Care Plans are designed for people who need focused and predictable assistance with their Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s). If a person has or develops needs that are random or unpredictable, it may be that in-home care services benefits them for a shorter time, until a long-term solution is selected and in place. We are happy to talk with you if you feel this change occurs, and refer you to professional resources for other care needs that arise.
